ALLNUTRITION XYLITOL is a natural compound classified as a so-called polyol. It occurs in nature as a component of the fibrous and woody parts of many plants, including fruit and vegetables, and of the birch tree from which it was first obtained, hence the name birch sugar.
Xylitol is similar to ordinary sugar in appearance and taste. However, this is where the similarities end. The differences appear at the stage of absorption and metabolism. Xylitol, when ingested, does not cause either a significant glucose or insulin response. Hence, it is recommended for people with insulin management disorders, e.g. diabetics. What is more, xylitol is sweeter than sugar and at the same time less caloric (1g of xylitol is only 2.4kcal, 1g of sucrose - 4kcal), so its sweetened dishes have lower energy value.
For dieters, xylitol makes it easy to control body weight. It slows down stomach emptying, which enhances the feeling of satiety, thus reducing overall food intake. Xylitol does not ferment in the digestive tract like glucose, fructose or sucrose. It is also important that xylitol, unlike table sugar, does not spoil teeth, and may even help fight tooth decay.
When consumed in excessive amounts, it can cause a laxative effect.
